🎄❄️On the 5th day of Christmas 🎶🎶Such an incredible opportunity to speak at the CommHIT25 event at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex on behalf of Authentic Exploration Matters. Each time I attend, I am reminded how valuable it is to step outside the field of education and appreciate the many essential parts of our society — healthcare, cybersecurity, fire and rescue, and education. It is incredibly inspiring to hear people share their passion for their work, the new things they are learning, the progress they are making, and their openness to working together.

However, when we look at our individual careers, we can’t help but remember those individuals who encouraged us to take the next step or provided on-the-job training when we got there. So, my talk centered around the vital need for mentorship in education, and I encouraged those who attended to come and make their own LEGO mentor at our table to reflect on their career. #STEAM

As educators, we are encouraged to create learning environments that foster curiosity, collaboration, and a sense of wonder in our students. We are mentors to hundreds, if not thousands, of students during our careers. CommHIT is a perfect example of what a strong, real-world learning environment looks like - one that fosters communication, inquiry, and above all, opportunity to “find” or be a “mentor”.

Returning to our retreat for the second time—this time in a lead role—AEM Ambassador Lynn McClish brings 12 years of experience in education and a deep passion for marine science.

She teaches both Honors and AICE Marine Science at Freedom High School, where she also serves as the Head Swim and Dive Coach, Science Department Chair, and an AVID Site Team member.

Lynn is known for creating immersive, hands-on learning experiences that inspire students to care for the ocean. Her classroom features a collaboratively maintained 300-gallon saltwater aquarium, and her students participate in unique initiatives like “Glow Games” to explore ocean zones.

Lynn also partners with UCF on projects such as mangrove monitoring and plans to incorporate coral fragments from the Coral Restoration Foundation to teach about ecosystem connections.

Her love for the ocean and dedication to teaching kids how they can protect it is at the heart of everything she does.

Today our educators experienced the perfect blend of scientific discovery and hands-on learning at Mote Marine Laboratory!

Ashlyn’s began with an engaging presentation that opened our teachers’ minds to the incredible research happening at Mote. It was followed up with the teachers rolling up their sleeves to build their own plankton tows. They then worked together in collaborative pairs, turning scientific concepts into tangible tools.

Taking those handmade plankton tows out on the kayak tour was where the magic truly happened. Our educators became citizen scientists, collecting samples from the pristine waters while experiencing firsthand what their students could achieve with the right opportunities.

The microscope work that followed brought gasps of wonder and excitement. Watching our teachers discover the hidden world of marine microorganisms – organisms they had collected themselves – was a powerful reminder of why experiential learning matters so much.

Our tour of Mote’s coral cultivation facility was the perfect finale, showing our educators the vital conservation work that connects directly to their classroom lessons. Subjecting our educators to these experiences urges them to make the classroom a more engaging space for both themselves and their students.

Our educators dove deep (literally and figuratively) into professional development that reignited their passion for creating engaging, hands-on learning experiences.

Seeing teachers light up during hands-on activities, collaborate with renewed energy, and experience “Captain Coral” reminded us exactly why we do this work. Our educators were encouraged to think outside the box. When we Day two stared off bright and early with snorkeling adventures at two reef restoration sites, where our educators witnessed firsthand the amazing work CRF does to protect our ocean’s future.

The spark in their eyes, the excitement in their voices, and the way they immediately started brainstorming how to bring these experiences back to their students.

THIS is what reigniting passion looks like.

These experiences don’t just enrich our educators, they create ripple effects that will reach countless students.

Today we welcomed an incredible group of educators to the beautiful Florida Keys for the start of our teacher retreat — a time for connection, renewal, and purpose.

After settling in, we shared a welcoming dinner together, followed by a fun and heartfelt get-to-know-you game that sparked laughter and new bonds.

As the sun began to set, we headed to the Key Lime Pie Factory for a sweet local treat 🥧 and signed a commemorative lock — a symbol of this shared experience and the journey we’re embarking on together.

Today was about arriving, grounding, and connecting. Tomorrow, the heart of the retreat truly begins as we rise early to work alongside the Coral Restoration Foundation — learning, restoring, and growing together in service and spirit.
