AEM Bioluminescence Resource Roundup

As teachers begin preparing for the start of the school year, the team at Authentic Exploration Matters wants you to know that we are here to help elevate and support the educator community.  We do that via a variety of avenues including the Resource Roundup, links to other resources once you send in a request, professional development opportunities, and more!  Check out our website to see ways we are working to elevate teachers!  One upcoming opportunity is a FREE professional development with ORCA(The Ocean Research and Conservation Association) in Vero Beach.  We will gather on August 24 at their facility and connect with their program that you can use to highlight data collection and analyzing as well as some amazing hands-on opportunities for you and your students to collaborate on!  The day will begin at 10am with an introduction to ORCA and their programs, a lab tour, and a communication challenge.  We will then drive to a coastal park to enjoy a picnic lunch(bring your own).  After lunch we will be trained in their “A Day In The Life” data collection program that students can also be a part of with you in the lead!  After the training, we will return to their facility and have to time collaborate and create cross-curricular lessons that we will share.  Space is limited!  You can register for FREE on our website at: https://www.authenticexplorationmatters.com/discovery-day

You can learn more about ORCA at: https://www.teamorca.org/

This week our Resource Roundup focuses on the magic of bioluminescence.  AEM Educator Ambassador Lynn Kelly McCllish is always looking for unique ways to pique her student's interest in engaging, hands-on lessons and activities.  She joins AEM during our Leading Light meet-up to kayak the Haulover Canal area and experience the phenomenon.  In line with our upcoming Discovery Day(above), the founder of ORCA, Dr Edith Widder, once said the following about an open ocean dive she participated in…”I knew I would see bioluminescence, but I was totally unprepared for how much.  It was incredible!  There were explosions of light everywhere, like being in the middle of a silent fireworks display”.

Lynn loves sharing the many mysteries and wonders of the ocean with her students.  One of her favorite topics focuses on light and color in the ocean.  Explore this weeks topic of bioluminescence to learn ways you can add this unique marine aspect to highlight standards in your class.
